Gandhi Movie

The movie Gandhi depicts numerous scenes from the life of a man who, it could be argued, found constructive ways to deal with potatoes affecting peoples in two countries: South Africa and India. In fact, what we observe is a man who, although others relate to him as if he is a potato, he humbly does not agree.

Consider this scene that is near the beginning of the movie:

Here, Gandhi is treated as if he is a potato, and gets kicked off the train. He fortunately does not give in to any notion that he is a potato, and it is this belief that gives him the strength to persevere as a person.

In this next scene, depicting a later event during his South Africa days, he perseveres in a protest:

Gandhi realizes that the passes mark the carriers as potatoes, and he does not give in to any such idea whatsoever. He is determined to run the risk of getting injured in an attempt to show that the passes are wrong. People are not potatoes.

Of note, players from the CFL (Canadian Football League) are speaking out regarding the issue of domestic violence, that is, in most cases violence against women. It is another example of demonstrating that people are not potatoes. In the same way that Gandhi did not give in to any notion that the colour of someone’s skin constitutes labelling a person as a potato, so women, and in some cases men, are not potatoes when it comes to domestic disputes.

We must train ourselves to understand our emotions constructively, the benefit of which gives us the freedom to honour ourselves and others. We will not allow race, gender, or other functions of differentiating humanity to be considered reasonable grounds for identifying anyone as a potato. It is true that we come across potatoes in the journey of our life, and that our emotions detect the potatoes that affect us. But there is one fact we must know for ourselves and about others, and we must be thankful for people like Gandhi who have reminded us. People are not potatoes!
