We’re in the middle of a January cold snap here in Edmonton. Today we hovered between -24 to -26°C and had more snow. Although complaints are commonly heard about the weather in these parts, there are also those who enjoy the snow.
Maybe Edmonton could start a “Januaryfest,” a time to celebrate the cold and the snow. Edmonton could become a tourist attraction to people seeking the adventure of cold and snow in a northern metropolis setting.
Januaryfest (Janufest?) events could include:
- Dogsledding
- Cross-country skiing
- Snowshoeing
- Skating
- Tubing, Sledding, Tobogganing
- Walking, Hiking
- Ice Sculpting
- Outdoor hockey (or Indoor)
- Ice Fishing
- Ice Sailing
- Snow golfing
- Making Snow Angels
- Ultimate Snow Frisbee
- Edmonton Coffee and Grog by a fire (inside or outside – your choice!)
- Snow Baseball (never a rainout!)
- A trip by day in a train to Jasper to see the varied country scenery, perhaps overnight stay and return to Edmonton the next day after a day of downhill skiing/boarding or other Jasper activity.
- And many more!
The scenery of fresh snow carpeting the landscape, especially with the colouring of dawn or at dusk is breathtaking and extremely peaceful. One can even enjoy the view from indoors, with the warmth of a sweater, a fireplace, and with great background music or in silence. Huddle together with your significant other; it’s a great place to bond!
